What is AWS?

Hey! This is TT. I recently face with a lot of IT issues immediately after Golden Week, Japanese holiday in May. Let’s learn IT today as well :).

Let me introduce myself again as after the Golden Week. I am TT who is a just business consultant and make a living with that. I mainly supported customers as Project Management Office, which is managing status of project called PMO in short. However, in 2021 which is my fourth year as a business man, I engaged in IT-related work and started this blog.

Well, the IT-related work is maintaining and operating customer’s network using AWS service. Although we do not build new services, in the case of malfunction, it became necessary to use IT knowledge which I had not faced since I became a business consultant. Today I would like to introduce you to AWS, which inspired me to enter the IT domain!

1. What is AWS?

The official name of WS is Amazon Web Service, which is a cloud service platform provided by Amazon, the largest online shopping site. AWS offers over 200 services, from infrastructure technologies such as computing, storage and databases to new technologies such as machine learning, AI, data lakes and analytics, and IoT.

In 2020, the service recorded sales of 45,370 million dollars (approximately 4,854.5 billion yen), which is a 29.5% increase from the previous year and is expected to grow further despite its exceptional scale.

2. What is Cloud?

Oh, a lot of terminology came out… This time, I will explain only the outline. Cloud above is to outsource a server that provides information and services to other computers on the network outside the company.

Server is core of IT services. In the past, it was common for companies to prepare servers. However, with the emergence of companies such as Amazon that provide servers to the outside, it has become possible to obtain server functions without having to prepare or operate server.

In terms of global market size, it has grown to $ 150 billion at the end of 2020, accounting for 32% of the total, followed by Microsoft at 20%, Google at 9%, and AWS. I’m running at the top.

3. Merit of AWS

Well, it turns out that AWS is a cloud service provided by Amazon, and the cloud service is outsourced to the server. So what are the benefits of using AWS? AWS has the great appeal of being able to use a variety of services, but broadly speaking, it offers users the following six benefits.

  1. Precending spending with variable spending
Precending spending refers to things that need to be invested before use, such as data centers, physical servers, and other resources. Variable spending means paying only for the computing resources you use, rather than making a large investment in your data center or server before you know your usage.
By adopting cloud computing, which has the advantage of variable spending, companies can implement innovative solutions while reducing costs.
  2. Reduce data center maintenance costs
Data center computing requires a lot of money and time to manage infrastructure and servers.
The advantage of cloud computing is that it reduces the burden of administrative tasks and allows you to focus on your applications and customers.
  3. Reduce capacity estimation costs
With cloud computing, you don’t have to predict the capacity required for your infrastructure before deploying your application.
For example, you can create an Amazon EC2 instance when you need it and pay only for the time you use it. You can use only the capacity you need without incurring charges for unused resources or being limited by insufficient capacity. You can also scale in or out depending on your demand.
  4. Overwhelming economies of scale
With cloud computing, you can keep variable costs lower than building your own environment.
Providers such as AWS can enjoy high economies of scale as the use of resources by hundreds of thousands of users is centralized in the cloud. Due to its economies of scale, pay-as-you-go charges can be kept low.
  5. Speed
The flexibility of cloud computing makes it easy to develop and deploy applications.
This flexibility allows you to spend more time experimenting and innovating. For data center computing, it can take weeks to get the new resources you need. Cloud computing, on the other hand, makes new resources available in minutes.
  6. Expand globally in a short period of time
The global service scale of the AWS cloud enables low-latency, fast deployment of applications to customers around the world. This means that customers can use the application with minimal delay, even if the developer is in a different country than the customer.
Later in this course, we’ll take a closer look at AWS Global Infrastructure. Consider some of the services you can use to deliver content to customers around the world.

4. Conclusion

The above is AWS overview. AWS is summarized below.

  1. AWS is a cloud service provided by Amazon.
  2. Cloud service outsources server.
  3. AWS allows users to get server functionality without having to prepare or operate the server.

As mentioned at the beginning, AWS has more than 200 services, and even if you focus on one function, you can create another article. AWS is involved in my main business, so I would like to cover more in the future.

Since AWS is unexpectedly used for the services you are using, it may be interesting to observe the world from the perspective of what technology is used behind IT services. I have just touched on it since April, so I would like to increase my knowledge and disseminate it.

Thank you for reading!
